We were so excited, and we just wanted to be treated like equals with the kids, in terms of wanting the experience. We got no picture and had to go back in line for another one.Īdults like mermaids too!!! By the time we got in like the second time I did get to interact with the mermaid but not a good picture because my brother had given up and was sitting across the way. She added three kids to our window anyway and the mermaid didn’t interact with my brother and I at all, just the kids. I said I had waited half an hour to have the experience and to get a picture. We LOVED the mermaid exhibit! My only comment would be that I ended up waiting in line twice because the woman sending people to wait at various windows sent my brother and I (our group) and then asked if it was okay if another group joined. I was grateful for the option of using the wheelchair like a walker or sitting and being pushed when needed. It was a lot of walking, and I have a number of injuries still healing. My first time at this aquarium, and it was amazing how they had plenty of rental wheelchairs, and most tanks were easily viewed from that level. While this house represents the shear decadence of lavish living, the architecture is something truly amazing and worth visiting and appreciating. It was later sold to the society in 1972. In 1948, it was leased to the Preservation Society of Newport County for $1 per year. His wife inherited the home, eventually giving it to her daughter Gladys as her other six children weren't interested in the property. Much to Vanderbilt's dismay, he enjoyed the house for only a few years before dying in 1899. At this time, the house is decorated for Christmas which adds enormously to the grandeur of the already lavish architecture, furnishings, and decor. We were fortunate to have nice weather, 51⁰, which we're told by locals is a gift. ![]() We arrived for our tour on November 28th, off-season. Downloading an app provides for the audio portion of the self guided tour. We purchased our tickets online as part of a package with Viking Trolley Tours. Ticket prices are $29 for adults and $10 for youth. The Breakers was constructed by Richard Morris Hunt and is now a museum and location for special events and concerts. Otherwise, the family resided in their residence on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. This was the Vanderbilt's summer "cottage" for the months of July and August. Shipping and railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt II's 70 room, 100,000 sq ft "Breakers" mansion is the epitome of American decadence and vanity during the "Gilded Age" of 1870s to 1910. ![]()
